Briefly describe your tentative APP or how you think you might incorporate media literacy into the work that you do with teachers and/or students.
Tentative Title: Examining Pseudoscience
Target Audience: 8th graders
Curriculum Goals: To understand scientific processes (Analysis, Inquiry, Design)
Media Literacy Goals: To integrate critical thinking in media literacy through examining pseudoscience to understand how science really works.
Other Goals:1 - Correcting misconceptions about what constutites "science"
2 - Creating relevance between the scientific process and students' lives
Proposed Activities:
Evaluating the validity of specific source ("websites") claims through a checklist (see Berkely toolkit list).
Assessment/Evaluation (how will you know your APP works to meet your goals?):
A student created Podcast where they investigate the claims made about their topic. They take on the role of an investigative reporter who is presnting their evidence to their audience.
Resources/Support that will help you in your development of the APP:
Learn how to create Podcasts through Audacity, VocieThread or Photo Story
Compiling lists of media resources for topics which are pseudoscience as well as valid science
Difficulties/Obstacles to developing your APP:
4 people collaborating from 2 different schools....just making time to meet/share info
